eToro pays 5% in stock for crypto deposits — what the terms say

Until 31 August, crypto moved from an external wallet into eToro's hosted wallet earns free shares worth 5% of the month's net deposits, capped at $2,000 a month — automatically, with no code and no opt-in. The terms have four clauses worth reading before you move a single coin: month-end pricing, a 90-day lock, what counts as a deposit, and what the cap really means.

eToro is running a summer promotion it calls Stock Back: transfer crypto from any external wallet or exchange into your eToro hosted wallet between 1 July and 31 August, and eToro credits you free shares — 5% of your monthly net crypto deposits, up to $2,000 per month. Participation is automatic; there is no promo code and no opt-in. One detail the marketing undersells: the eligibility clause in the terms does not require you to be a new customer — an existing eToro account with a hosted wallet qualifies the moment it receives a deposit.

How is the 5% actually counted?

On the net flow, valued at the end of the month. The terms define the base as all crypto deposited from external wallets that month, minus your crypto withdrawals and fees — and here is the clause to slow down for: the whole thing is "calculated solely on the closing price of the applicable cryptoassets at month-end". Deposit $10,000 of bitcoin on the 5th, watch it slide 15% by the 31st, and your reward base is $8,500 — the 5% pays $425, not $500. The volatility risk of the waiting period sits with you, in both directions.

Two flows don't count against you, and one doesn't count at all: selling crypto to fiat inside the platform (a "Cash Out") is explicitly not treated as a withdrawal, so it leaves the reward base intact — while transfers from another eToro account or an eToro-affiliated wallet were never deposits to begin with.

What do you get, and when?

Shares — eToro either assigns a stock or lets you pick from its list, at its own discretion, within 14 days of the following month's start. Rewards under $2.50 arrive as cash instead. And the reward carries a 90-day lock from the day it lands: the value cannot be withdrawn before that, though the deposit itself, notably, has no holding requirement in these terms.

What is the cap worth?

The $2,000 monthly maximum is hit at exactly $40,000 of net deposits — 5% of anything above that earns nothing, so at $100,000 the effective rate is 2%. The promotion page quietly acknowledges the edge: above $40,000 it invites you to email for "a more attractive offer tailored to your portfolio". Run both full months at the cap and the theoretical maximum is $4,000 in shares for $80,000 of crypto moved in.

The question the promo actually asks

Strip the mechanics away and this is a price on custody: after a year in which European users pulled coins from exchanges into their own wallets en masse, eToro is offering 5% — capped — for moving them the other way, into a hosted wallet where the platform holds the keys. Transfers in are free on eToro's side (the sending network's fees still apply), the wallet supports 200+ assets, and eToro (Europe) is MiCA-licensed for EEA crypto services — one of the platforms on our running list of MiCA-licensed exchanges. Whether shares worth 5% of one month's deposits price that custody move correctly for you is, as always, your decision — and in several countries a credited reward is taxable income, which the terms explicitly leave on your side of the table.

If the maths does work for you: the promotion enrols automatically once you deposit, and signing up through our eToro partner link — disclosed as such — costs you nothing extra.

Crypto assets are volatile and may not be appropriate for retail investors; the full amount invested may be lost, and holding crypto in any hosted wallet carries counterparty risk. This article describes eToro's published promotion terms as of 17 July; eToro can amend or end the promotion at its discretion. It is not investment or tax advice, and whether to move crypto anywhere — or hold it at all — is your call, not ours.
